Junk Plant Grand Gulf: Trips, Down Powers And Slow Startups All Over The Place

MANUAL REACTOR SCRAM

"At 1644 [CDT] a manual reactor scram was inserted by placing the Reactor Mode Switch to Shutdown. At 1643 [CDT] the Condensate Booster Pump A tripped on low suction pressure. At 1644 [CDT] the Reactor Feed Pump A tripped on low suction pressure. A Recirculation Flow Control Valve runback occurred as designed. Reactor Water level was approaching the Automatic Low Water Level 3 (11.4 inches) scram set point and manual actions were taken by placing the Mode Switch to Shutdown before the low level set point was reached. All systems responded as expected following the manual scram. The plant is stable in mode 3. This event is being reported under 10CFR 50.72(b)(2)(iv)(B), as any event or condition that results in actuation of the Reactor Protection System (RPS), when the reactor is critical.

"The NRC Senior Resident Inspector has been notified."

All control rods fully inserted, and decay heat is being removed through the turbine bypass valves to the main condenser. The licensee is investigating the cause of the event.

Brunswick: Sixty Foot Flood To Inudate The Plant In A Week

Flooding to roads leading to facility have stranded workers, however, plant remains safe

Duke Energy’s nuclear plant in Brunswick County is now inaccessible due to flooding, which has left workers stranded.

Highways 87, 133 and 211 to get to the Southport facility are all mostly impassable, although a few have braved the elements and made it in and out. One worker, who wish to not be identified, said they are fine despite the circumstances and got food delivered via helicopter.

The worker estimates about 250 people are at the plant between maintenance, security and operations

“We are all dirty and tired,” the worker said. “We lost county water to the site yesterday, but we just got it back.”

The worker made it clear the plant is safe despite the effects from Hurricane Florence. Reactors were shut down hours before hurricane-force winds hit the region.

A P-3 Orion aircraft flew over the plant Monday to check on any damage from overhead.

Hurricane Florence: Sixty Foot Flood to Inundate Brunswick Nuclear Plant on Cape Fear River NC

On Saturday morning, CNN reports that National Weather Service forecast flood waters on Cape Fear River in Wilmington N.C. to crest at 60 feet (sixty feet) early next week. Wilmington is near Southport, home of two reactor Brunswick nuclear plant on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. The nuclear plant has a sea wall designed to withstand 22 feet of flooding according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. On Saturday morning the river gage on Cape Fear River in Wilmington had reached 16 feet with forecast of rising rapidly to an astounding record sixty feet of flood crest early next week.

Heavy downpours continue as Florence moves very slowly to the south west. The wide Cape Fear River is a major channel for flood water runoff to reach the ocean.

A fifty to sixty flood inundating the plant will mean thirty to forty foot deep flood coursing through the plant. This is almost certain to knock out onsite emergency generators at the nuclear plant to cool the reactors. What stands between catastrophic nuclear disaster are additional pumps and additional backup generation installed after Fukushima.

The ability of the reactors to tolerate prolonged deep flood waters is unknown. It was reported that waterproof steel doors had been installed on seven key locations in anticipation of the storm.

The Brunswick reactors are the same GE Mark I reactors that are at Fukushima. It is highly likely that offsite power to the nuclear plant will be disrupted by hurricane Florence. In this case, onsite emergency generators will be required to maintain cooling systems for the nuclear plants and spent fuel ponds filed with highly radioactive waste.

If water overtops the seawall, it can lead to electrical failure and potential for catastrophic events similar to the Fukishima reactor disaster that resulted in multiple reactor meltdowns and hydrogen explosions in overheating reactors.

“We face imminent danger of nuclear catastrophe, now that the forecast is for a 60 foot flood crest at 22 foot sea wall at the Brunswick plant. All possible assistance shall be provided immediately to help prevent nuclear disaster,” said energy expert Roy Morrison.

Brunswick Is Isolated From Outside By Flooding At Beginning of Florence

I just emailed these guys with my concern. The problem with the NRC spokesman's people you never know up to date their information. You have a set of management and NRC emergency groups overseeing the accident. This guy just might be keying on information 56 hours old. For all we know, higher management might have told the public affairs official, we will update you with information for our own purposes, but told the pubic affair don't you dare call us. Just go with information in the first notification. Personally, I think they are intentionally withholding information from the public as to confuse the recue and recovery efforts... I think the plant is in more dire straight than what they told us. What is the accurate condition of the plant right now? I am afraid senior NRC managers are keeping this public affairs officer in the dark.

Southport, NC: Nuclear state of emergency

10:10 a.m.: Duke Energy’s Brunswick nuclear plant, about 30 miles south of Wilmington, has declared a state of emergency because the 1,200-acre complex is cut off by flood waters and and inaccessible to outside personnel. The plant has declared the lowest level of emergency, as required by Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said NRC spokesman Joey Ledford.

The problem is that no one can come in and relieve the workers who have been on site for days.

Ledford said the twin-reactor nuclear plant is stable and poses no threat to public safety. It has offsite power from the grid to cool the nuclear reactor and radioactive nuclear waste at the site.

Charlotte-based Duke shut down the two reactors ahead of the advancing storm when Florence was a Category 4 hurricane. Federal law requires nuclear operators to shut down nuclear reactors when sustained wind speeds are at 74 miles per hour or faster.

That last USGS graph picture didn't work. The storm rainfall is 31inches so far?

Brunswick Nuclear Plant Vastly Exceeded Its Licencing Bases Precipitation Rate

About the bases, they have no proof the plant is safe.

Tomorrow is expected to have heavy rain all day...

As of 8 am this morning, they have received a total of 31 inches.
